Resort Hotel
Rome is no newcomer to the urban resort, editions of Hilton and Radisson Blu mostly located along the perimeter of the historic city much like Gran Melia Villa Agrippina that sits just outside Vatican City. The hip, fun-minded Spanish chain finds a palatial pillow to rest its head on in Rome, namely inside the former palace occupied by the mother of a late-Roman emperor Nero with lobby stocked with artifacts discovered during excavation. The chain infuses its quaff-but-cool décor of velvety wing chairs with covered headrests amongst built-in window banquettes and opposing fireplaces. The pool is the true pièce de résistance that fits in perfectly amongst the imperial setting of oblong daybeds and curtained cabanas. Dining comes at two eateries, the more formal Vivavoce created by the two Michelin star chef Alfonso Iaccarin of Don Alfonso 1890.
The Room
More intimate than it first appears, the hotel’s 115 rooms include its signature Red Level that’s a premium room level offering food and beverage presentations as well as private check-in and complimentary champagne. Deluxe rooms offer a glamorous setting of heavily puddled silk drapery, Renaissance-inspired artwork and knotty wood floors not found in your typical international hotel. Entry Red Level rooms are loft-style spaces with orb soaking tub open to the main sleeping space. Those without a budget find garden rooms and Luxury Apartment that include dramatic terraces and private gardens with tippy toe view of St. Peter’s.
